After 150 years, the Otis "family" has remained
intact. Though Elisha Graves Otis' direct descendents are no longer
the driving force, those with similar vision are.
"The value
of Otis' 'family' feeling is unquantifiable; yet it must have
contributed to the ease with which changes to the company’s
organization were pushed through at crucial moments. Charles Otis
and William Hale turned Otis Brothers (Company) into an efficient
East Coast manufacturer, and (William) Baldwin made the Otis
Elevator Company number one in North America. Percy Douglas launched
the rational expansion of Otis enterprises around the world in a
highly centralized operation focused on the United States. Hubert
Faure remodeled the company on a regional framework, taking
advantage of the meteoric growth of business in Europe, and then in
the Pacific region, centralizing certain functions and
decentralizing others. Most recently, George David has overseen the
creation of a genuinely global Otis Elevator Company, with a similar
mix of central and devolved functions, reflecting conditions and
opportunities in a world no longer divided by curtains of iron or
bamboo.”
